Care and Maintenance of Your Powder-Coated Products

The effects of ultra violet light, pollution, dirt, grime and salt deposits are detrimental to a powder-coated surface as they accumulate over time. To comply with warranty requirements and extend the life of your products, a very simple maintenance program should be implemented. As a general rule, cleaning of the powder-coated surface must take place regularly. However in areas where pollutants are more prevalent, especially in coastal or industrial areas ( limited warranties apply to all products), a cleaning program should be carried out on a more frequent basis.

To clean the powder-coated surface:

  • Carefully remove any loose deposits with a wet sponge.
  • Use a soft brush or cloth (non abrasive), and a mild household or car wash detergent to remove other deposits. Do not use steel wool, scrapers, scouring liquids or powders as they will permanently scratch the coated surface.
  • Rinse off with clean water.
  • The application of a silicon lubricant to moving parts (eg. rollers, hinges etc.) is recommended often as part of the maintenance.

Individual Product Warranties

Roller Blinds Care and Maintenance

Regular dusting of the fabric will ensure no build up of dust and grime occurs. If required wipe stains with a soft cloth soaked in very mild soapy water. Sponge clean, avoid over zealous rubbing as this may permanently mark the blind. Professional cleaners using ultrasonic cleaning methods are recommended. Any other form of washing of the blinds is not recommended.

Other factors common with Roller Blinds are wafting or V’ing of the fabric, this can occur for many reasons not just the width of the blind, it arises from the deflection of the top roller tube and is caused from the weight of the fabric, fabric type, different fabric manufacturers, span and drop of blinds and gravity pulling down, all blinds have degrees of wafting and it is a commerciably acceptable trait to have degrees of it and it is not a warrant-able issue, increasing the size of the top tube will not always eliminate this issue, blinds must be looked at straight on and with a noncritical light source, we tend to notice this wafting factor when blinds head over the 2000mm wide and 1500mm in drop area but can also occur when the blind is narrower and has a long drop or viewing the blinds from a side angle, there are no definite sizes that we can state will and wont have wafting, it is not possible for any company representative to predict how any blind will react until it is installed and operational, another factor is the environment and temperature fluctuations, hotter days can cause more wafting as the temperature nearer the ceilings of homes is always hotter and the top tube can deflect more due to heat on these days than cooler days.

No blind retailer/manufacturer can make assurances that their blinds will not have deflection, if any form of wafting/V’ing is not desired then another product should be looked at or blind sizes should be kept to an absolute minimum.

Another trait of roller blinds can be puckering along the bottom rail, this can occur for a number of reasons, the fabric is attached to the bottom rail by a plastic spline which can be stitched, stapled or stuck in place before being inserted into the bottom rail and each of these methods can be affected differently by the same reasons as above and some degree of puckering is normal on most blinds and can also be seasonal, the extreme heat and cold we experience in Australia can cause window treatments to react differently.

Please note that roller blinds tend to not roll up straight when first installed, guide the roller blind by holding bottom bar and looking up to ensure fabric is running up true on roller. Frayed edges caused by inattentive use will not be covered by warranty.

Warranty

  • Installation 12 months (Labour fees apply after 12 months)
  • Roller and Mechanism 2 Years
  • Fabric 3 Years
  • Warranty must be read in conjunction with the Care instructions and the Definitions of Environments page.

Care & Maintenance Guidelines

To keep you Plantation Shutters looking their best, please follow these simple guidelines:

  • Keep free from dust and dirt by regularly wiping over with soft cloth, as you would use on your best furniture.
  • Remove stubborn dirt with a soft cloth and very mild detergent in water (wipe gently, do not scrub). Dry wet areas immediately with a dry soft cloth.
  • Never use abrasives, don’t scour the surface. Never use silicon-based cleaning products.

If you have selected interior timber shutters it is important to note that timber is a natural product so will be affected by the environment and by use:

  • Do not leave windows open in wet weather. If the shutters get wet, dry immediately.
  • Inspect every 12 months and repair any damage.
  • Build-up of condensation can affect the paint finish therefore if shutters are fitted in rooms with poor ventilation or high humidity make sure there is good airflow around the panels-inspect every month.
  • To prevent premature deterioration, repair any damage as quickly as possible.
  • Rotate the blades on clear finished timber shutters to ensure a more regular and even mellowing of the timber colour. Arrange for a re-coat on these shutters prior to the breakdown of the surface. The surface can be kept smooth but the colour cannot be rejuvenated.

Many products in our range have visible tension devices on the blades which could require adjustment from time to time. Occasional adjustment will maintain an easy action of these blades.

Some hints for operating your Plantation Shutters:

  • When Bi-Folding Panels, close the blades before folding away. This will help to prevent damage which may be caused by blades touching blades.
  • When rotating the blades do not grab the very top or very bottom blades, grab a blade approx half way down the stack to evenly distribute the pressure, failure to do so may result in breaking the tension screw end of the blade, a replacement blade is not covered under warranty.
  • If sliding panels, close the blades before moving panels, unless designed to slide with blades open.
  • If any catches or supports have been fitted, make sure they are used.
  • Maintain the installation fitting in good working order.
  • Keep bottom tracks free from dirt and grit.
*Current as at December 2021, previously offered warranty periods had different timeframes. Above warranty relates to timber shutters only.

Zipscreen® Blind Care and Maintenance

Little maintenance is necessary. However, from time to time, we recommend you clean PVC with warm soapy water and wipe dry. Occasionally after washing use a quality Plastic and Vinyl Cleaner like “VuPlex”® to clean, polish and remove static on clear and coloured plastic. Never roll up and store PVC blinds while wet, always dry PVC before storing for long periods of time to avoid a milky film appearing on the surface. Fabrics should also be clean periodically to avoid a build up of grime using a mild soapy mix and hose off to dry.

Extrusions: At least four times a year tracks should be washed with soap and water and clear Silicone Spray should be applied to the tracks (extreme environments will require more regular maintenance).

Blinds should not be left down during inclement weather, storms or while the home is unoccupied, excessive winds may cause the fabrics to tear or damage the tracks, side channels and walls, damage of this nature is not covered under warranty, blinds fixed into Hebel walling are not as secure as traditional bricks and mortar walls and are more susceptible to movement due to inclement weather.

Warranty

  • Installation 12 months (Labour fees apply after 12 months)
  • Motors 5 years
  • Head box and Bottom Rail 5 years
  • Aluminium Extrusions 5 years
