How to Clean and Maintain Your Blinds for Longevity

Blinds are an integral part of any home, providing privacy, light control, and style. To ensure they last for years, it’s essential to clean and maintain them properly. At Fair Price Blinds, we offer a wide range of high-quality window treatments, including roller blinds, plantation shutters, and external blinds. Each type requires specific care to retain its functionality and appearance. In this blog, we’ll outline the best practices for maintaining your blinds, explain common issues you might encounter, and offer expert tips for keeping your window treatments in excellent condition.

Care and Maintenance Tips for Different Types of Blinds

Roller Blinds

Roller blinds are a versatile and practical choice. To keep them looking and functioning at their best, regularly dust the fabric to prevent the build-up of grime. For stains, use a soft cloth dampened with mild soapy water and gently sponge clean. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, as it may damage the material. Professional ultrasonic cleaning is recommended for deep cleaning, but avoid washing or soaking the blinds in water.

Common Issues

Wafting or V’ing of Fabric: This is caused by the weight of the fabric and environmental factors like heat. It is a normal characteristic and not a defect. Puckering Along the Bottom Rail: Seasonal changes can cause the fabric to pucker slightly.

Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters add timeless elegance to any room. Proper care includes dusting with a soft cloth regularly, using mild detergent and water to clean stubborn spots, and drying immediately with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive or silicone-based cleaners, which can damage the finish.

Warranty Information

Fair Price Blinds provides warranties for plantation shutters against defects in materials or workmanship. However, damage from improper cleaning, environmental factors, or wear and tear is not covered.

Vertical Blinds

To maintain vertical blinds, dust the fabric regularly, clean stains gently with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, and consider professional ultrasonic cleaning for deeper cleaning.

Zipscreen® and Ziptrak® Blinds

These external blinds are designed for durability but require periodic maintenance.

Ensure tracks are clean by gently hosing with cool water and lubricate with a clear silicone spray at least 3 monthly.

Mesh fabric should be kept clean by brushing regularly on both sides of the fabric using a soft bristle brush and hosing occasionally with clear cold water. Do not apply detergents, cleaning fluids, soaps or any kind of insecticides or garden sprays. Do not allow foreign matter; dirt, bird droppings, tree sap etc, to remain in contact with the fabric. Avoid harsh scrubbing or rubbing as this may damage the surface of the fabric. Before stowing away the blind, ensure the fabric is thoroughly dry.

Clean PVC materials with warm soapy water, then dry thoroughly. Use a quality plastic and vinyl cleaner occasionally to maintain clarity and remove static. Never roll up or store PVC blinds when wet, as this can lead to a milky film forming on the surface.

Aluminium Venetians

To keep aluminium venetians in excellent condition, dust slats regularly to prevent grime build-up and use mild soapy water to clean stains, drying immediately after cleaning.

Timber Venetians

Timber venetians require extra care to protect their natural finish. Dust slats regularly and avoid using water or cleaning agents that could damage the wood.

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds should be cleaned with care to maintain their appearance. Dust regularly, especially along the fold lines, and clean stains with mild soapy water, using a soft cloth and gentle pressure. Try and keep water to a minimum or you may damage the fabric.

Cellular Blinds

Cellular blinds are stylish and energy-efficient. Lightly spray soiled areas with an appropriate cleaner, then wipe gently with a damp cloth. Avoid crushing or wrinkling the pleats. Leave the blinds fully extended to allow proper drying and air circulation.

Verandah Blinds

To keep your verandah blinds in top shape, brush the fabric regularly on both sides with a soft brush, hose down occasionally with cold water starting from the bottom and working upwards, and ensure the fabric is completely dry before rolling up to prevent mould or mildew.

General Maintenance Tips

Regardless of the type of blind, follow these universal care practices:

  • Regular Dusting: Prevents the build-up of dirt and allergens.
  • Prompt Cleaning: Address stains immediately to avoid permanent marks.
  • Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Always use mild, non-abrasive cleaning agents.
  • Operate Gently: Handle blinds carefully to avoid damage to mechanisms or fabrics.
